Salardú
Description
Capital of the municipality of Naut Aran, with 597 inhabitants and at an altitude of 1,268 m., on a rocky elevation to the right of the Garona river, and where it meets the Unhòla river, which surrounds the core of Salardú to the N and to the E .
Given its strategic location at the entrance of the Valley through the port of Bonaigua, it resulted in the town being fortified since the medieval period. In the upper part, where the church is today, there was the castle of Salardú, the master tower must have been the current bell tower. Today, there are few remains of the fortification near the apse of the church.
However, some houses with 17th century windows have been preserved. The Plaza Mayor is the center of the old town and has a beautiful 19th century fountain. The parish church of Sant Andreu, located at the top, presiding over a beautiful square enclosed by a wall, should be highlighted. It is a transitional building from the 12th-13th centuries, the door is Romanesque and has some Gothic windows. The bell tower, one of the most prominent in the Valley, has an octagonal plan, dates back to the 15th century and forms a body apart from the SW angle. It is very slender and equipped with arrowheads that give it a defensive character.
The most important piece in its interior is the famous Christ of Salardú, Romanesque carving from the end of the 12th century, about 0.62 m high, nailed into a cross of wide, beautifully polychrome posts and finished at its ends in four square panels, is considered one of the most valuable Romanesque sculptures in the area. A splendid set of large-scale 16th-century wall paintings in the area of the presbytery should also be highlighted.
The village has a school, library, sports complex, outdoor heated swimming pool, a Pitch&putt golf course, pharmacy, tourist office, post office, bank office, shops, several hotels, bars and restaurants.
It celebrates its main festival on the 3rd of May “Santa Creu”, very famous in Aran. Around the cross of Sant Crist de Salardú, the rest of the crosses from the other towns of the municipality are gathered and at the end of it they arrive in procession at Plaça de la Pica to bless the acabo.
On November 30, “Sant Andrés” is celebrated, the patron saint of Salardú. October 7 is the animal fair, which arrives from the mountain pastures at this time
