Montgarri
Description
Crossing the Pla de Beret you reach Montgarri (1,645 m) which due to its isolation was completely depopulated between 1945 and 1955.
The Sanctuary of Montgarri, located to the left of the Noguera Pallaresa, dates from the 16th century and some elements of the
Romanesque building remain, with a single nave, good proportions and a wooden roof, the octagonal bell tower finished in arrow.
A polychrome wooden cross with a nailed Christ from the 13th century is preserved in the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona.
Around the sanctuary is the rectory and the old hospital that welcomed pedestrians.
On July 2 and August 15, a very popular pilgrimage is held, highly regarded by the towns of the valley, in veneration of the Virgin of Montgarri.
The rectory has been restored and offers shelter service, there is also a restored hut that offers restaurant service.
